Successful exhibition - yippeeeeee!!

I posted recently about making work for the TAGS exhibition.

It closed on Wednesday 20th July and I am so chuffed that I sold one of my two pieces.

The theme this year was 'Time and Tide' - chosen after the group couldn't decide between  time as it relates to the fact that it is TAGS' 18th birthday this year, and tide because many people are inspired by the beautiful Suffolk coast. As a theme it worked well and nearly everyone produced work that fit the theme for once!! We are contemplating no theme for 2012 and I would be delighted personally. I would like to see what I produce when left to my own devices.

I put in 2 pieces - one called 'Ripples and Reflections' and the other one is called 'Memories of Burston'. Ripples and Reflections is the one that sold.

The piece is based on a photograph taken about 5 years on a trip to Cornwall. I went with my sister who is a painter and we had 5 days as an artists holiday taking photos and producing work while we were away. The photo that inspired this one was taken in the late afternoon / early evening at Padstow Harbour. The reflections are the masts of boats moored in a line.

The background was hand-painted using a mixture of acrylic paints mixed with Ormoline medium and fabric paint. The cotton fabric was then dried scrunched up to allow the paint to settle in horizontal lines. The ripples are made from very loose scrim and the reflections are densely machine embroidered. The whole piece is backed with calico and hangs like an art quilt with a hanging sleeve, wooden dowel and cord.

The piece was bought by a lady who sails and said she instantly recognised the reflections of the masts. I was really chuffed to meet her when she came to pick the work up as the exhibition closed.
